Program:

Troy Harper, Director of Emergency Operations was the guest speaker.  He shared the Flagler County Disaster Preparedness Guide, 2007 Edition.

Some highlights of his program are as follows:

A disaster is a disruption of major infrastructure.  Flagler has only had minor inconveniences, no major disruptions to the infrastructure.  Katrina was a true natural disaster.

Troy said that Flagler County has a plan and they exercise the plan.  He recommends that we “Be Prepared Not Scared.”  If asked to evacuate, please evacuate.  Services may not be able to get in and out of areas that they have had to evacuate.

You can go to http://floridadisaster.org/family to have a plan prepared for you and your family.  In the guide on page 7 there is a 12 weeks Home Emergency Preparedness plan.  He recommends that every family complete this plan so in case of an emergency we are prepared in advance and not preparing at the last moment.

Hazards discussed in the guide are hurricanes, thunderstorms, tornadoes, flood and fire. Mr. Harper recommends that every house had a NOAA Weather Alert Radio.  These can be purchased in most any store.

On page 11 of the guide is Important Information sheet that should be kept in every glove compartment.  This information will also be published in the Journal the first week in June.  Please look for this information and keep it in a convenient location.  These phone numbers, television stations and radio stations can help you gain any information that may be needed during an emergency.

In this guide you can also find evacuation routes, first aid information, Flagler County shelter information and Wildfire Safety Tips.

If you or a family member have special needs please register at 313-4200.

Volunteers are needed, for more information please call 313-4200 or visit www.FlaglerEmergency .com.

Floridapets.net will give you information on hotels that will allow pets during emergency evacuations.

Although we have been impacted by budget cuts it has not endangered our ability to serve Flagler County needs in case of an emergency

At the end of the presentation the meeting was adjourned by Thad Crowe at 8:48

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Fairley
